Pedro Alvares Cabral was the commander of the Portuguese fleet that discovered what we now know as Brazil. When the fleet arrived to Brazil they claimed Brazil as Portuguese. But no colonies were established in Brazil until the year 1530. The Portuguese held on to Brazil for over 300 years. Brazil was known as the Kingdom of Brazil under the Portuguese Empire.
